Hey guys!
I'm moving to New York to go to school in october and my roommate and I are attempting to find a place to live. I've found a couple of places in Inwood, Washington Heights, and Hamilton Heights and wanted to know if those were safe areas? Also, how long woud the subway ride be if i were trying to get to midtown and the chelsea area? Oh, and what do you think of converting a living room into a bedroom? Has anyone done that and is it a practical idea?

Any help you could give me would be amazing!!!!
<3 Kt.

Inwood is nice, but you have to go through crappy neighbohoods like Washington Heights to get there.

If you caught an express A train you would get to Inwood in 20 minutes, or 40 minutes from downtown Manhattan or the Village if you caught a local train instead.

It would help if you told us what you could afford on rent per momth. So many people want to live in Manhattan only to discover they can't afford to live in Manhattan.

The person using the living room as a bedroom would have to deal with people walking through to get to the other bedroom.

Those neighborhoods have safe areas but also sketchy areas. Overall they aren't the worst but aren't the best. Be street smart and you'll be fine.

I know people who live in converted living rooms and such. A screen helps. I mean it's really up to you and your lifestyle. I enjoy having my own bedroom but would consider a situation like that if if i had to. I don't spend much time at home. You'd have to make sure your roommate understands ground rules as far as keeping quiet at night... you don't want to be trying to sleep when somebody's watching a loud TV or cooking next to your bed obviously.

It really just depends on you. I sleep in the living room with the TV on, but that's because I'm a sound sleeper.. I won't wake up for anything!
