Im still contemplating the move to NYC but i am very hesitant about jobs and i would like to know what the average a temp job pays and will i be able to afford my own place with one?Just to let you all know i dont plan to move to in a fancy condo in manhatten i want to live in the Bronx or Brooklyn...keep in mind that i have a job(and im saving money before i move)also im in college for about another year in a half.I refuse to move there without having a trade with experience invested and money saved up.Im just really worried about finding a job to get me on my feet and a decent place to live.Im not the type to say something without having proof to back it up but i heard that its harder for "out-of-towners" to get a job up there opposed to natives...

When I temp back in 94' the pay rate for me was $18 per hour. Not much has changed since than. Many of the girls/guys I come in contact with at the bank made between $14-$24 depending on their skills. Those who were paralegals made great money. It all comes down to skillset and prior background. When I was a temp, I had no experience, but had a college education and a recent 9 months certificate from a well-known secretarial school.

It may be easier if you could find an agency in NYC that has an office in your home town. That way you could go through all your testing and transfer your application to NYC.

I used to temp in NYC a long time ago and I was getting $20 per hour, but honestly I have no idea of what the going rate is now. What type of temp work are you thinking of doing? I was doing Executive Assistant and Legal Assistant work. It is very scary to move here without a job and some money to back you up in case work is slow. Have you called an agency to see what the current rate for your type of work is? I do know that the best employed temps make themselves very visible and are calling all of their agencies on a daily basis. If you just go in and take the tests and expect to get calls, it probably won't be very lucrative for you. These agencies have regular people who they know they can rely on and will usually place them first. Make sure you excell at your first placement and that will give you a leg up. Good luck to you!
