bounced check laws and eviction (apartment, lease, month to)

I apologize to write to you guys but I am in a bind of my own doing and wanted to know what the laws are.

I am presently renting an apartment in Brooklyn. I was to give my share of the rent to the person who was already living in the apartment (they don't own the apartment) who would give the check to the landlord - I would write the check to the person and they would write the chcek to the landlord. I have written a couple of rent checks that have bounced but have paid them. They bounced because of my lack of money management - I ended up having to financially take care of a family member and that plus other expenses
and my own irresponsibility had my checks bounced.

The person came up to me and told me that if I didnt pay the rent tomorrow that the landlord would have me arrested and garner my wages.
They were also evicting both of us due to the fact that they wanted to make major changes in the apartment. I was wondering if that is legal. I didnt sign a lease there and was on a month to month basis with the landlord.

I understand and do feel ****ty about my lack of financial responsibility and understand it wasn't anyone's fault but my own that I am in this situation.
