hey all. moving with a few roommates, i'm dead set on Queens but the roommates are looking in Astoria, which would be a helluva lot farther for my work commute in Bushwick.

so let me ask this. can anyone help with an Apples to Apples comparison of these two neighborhoods?
just to help, we are looking at a nice place in Astoria near 46th/Broadway, which seems like a nice enough area, but doens't quite seem like North Brooklyn to me.

any help would be appreciated. i'm very familiar with Greenpoint, but would love some imput on this specific area of Astoria.

I lived on 47th and Broadway in Astoria in a pre-war.

That area is OK. It's safe and all (even with the PJ's 3 blocks away) but there isn't much to do. There are a few bars though I never ventured into any of them (didn't look at all like my type of places) but I'm sure they are fine.

Good restaurants around there. Good Chinese/Mexican/***/Italian that we used to order from all the time.

Grocery store is right up on Northern Blvd at 47th Street.

The natural food store on Broadway and 46th is great and it saved my life when I lived there.

What else would you like to know?

I've passed through there numerous times but can't say I know exactly what is there in terms of amenities. I think it makes your commute much harder if you are travelling to Bushwick for work. Where are they commuting to?

If I had to choose, I would prefer to live in Greenpoint, but Astoria has plenty going for it and has tons of bars, markets, good restaurants, a large park - I'm just not sure of what is in the exact location you are looking in. You might check out the local astoria board at Astorians | Astoria New York, Long Island City, Queens West.

You will have to join to do a search.

yeah it looks like about a 45 minute commute from the V to the G train.

honestly i'm just wanting to know if Astoria is worth that long of a commute. i know its not that long really, but i don't HAVE to live in Astoria, i could cough up the extra monthly cash and live by myself in Greenpoint, so i guess thats basically my quandry. is it worth slighly cheaper rent to live out in Astoria, as opposed to where I want to be?

Astoria would be 1000/mo to live with roommates. + 45 minute commute.

Greenpoint would be $1500/mo to live by myself but only a 10 minute commute down the G train.

Gpoint is also closer to everything I like to do, like go to indie rock shows at the Music Hall, Market Hotel in Bushwick, etc etc

Only you can decide that. If you can afford it and it doesn't bother you, you might as well live where you want to. Astoria is cool, so is Greenpoint, but if you'd rather live in Greenpoint...

ok i guess lets narrow it down a little.

is that particular part of Astoria better or worse than others? trendy? bars/restaurants? music venues? anything to speak of? it looks pretty quiet and residential for the most part, at least on Google maps.

That particular corner is not a trendy area. Like I said, there are housing projects 3 blocks away and there are no trendy bars/restaurants to speak of what so ever for blocks. That area is not the best part of Astoria.

If you don't like high school kids, you don't want to live there. That's where Bryant is, and the kids tend to fill up the area a lot of the time.. and it's a little noisy. I wouldn't want to live next to a high school, but that's just me.

I live close by in Astoria. It's good because you're right by the RV stop. You have access to great restaurants from all over the world. I love Astoria. You are minutes from midtown. It's diverse...again, good food. That spot is the border of Woodside and on the outskirts so it can be a bit far from some good spots in Astoria (Astoria is big), but there is still stuff over there. Plus, like I said you're right on the subway stop so that's a BIG plus.
Astoria isn't Brooklyn and Queens has a different vibe, but I like it. I'm not sure what you're looking for, or where you work so how your commute would be, but I give that location a big thumbs up.

Some people might say don't go there because you're by the Woodside PJs, but it's fine over there. NOTHING to worry about. Oh yeah, you're also very close to some big box stores. Home Depot, Best Buy, Staples, Sports Authority on Northern Blvd.

If you have specific questions, or tell me what exactly you want I could try to help more! Good luck with the move.

PJs don't necessarily mean it's dangerous or bad. Those PJs are fine!!!! Tame and not a problem. A bigger problem IMO is that it's close to Bryant High School - which could be annoying for some people. Kids hanging around and stuff. But the area is not dangerous. I live a few blocks from there. I feel safe. It is at the end of Astoria, close to the border of Woodside, so it is a bit far from a lot of spots, but you can take the RV right there or walk.
