Yes, the Chrysler Building, Empire State, Woolworth Building, the old Metropolitan Tower on 23rd, and so many others are just such icons of NYC.
The Twin Towers were the buildings that everyone loved to hate, as Fred pointed out, when they were built, and they never really turned a profit until later years, and one of the reasons is that the Port Authority overestimated the demand for square footage in Lower Manhattan. Yamasaki's designs, were, however, very New York creations, bold, controversial and strong design elements that ANNOUNCED their presence. Capitalizing upon simple repetitive forms, the towers captured an elegance of space both from an internal and external perspective. The interiors, with large spaces, framed the views in all directions, while from the exterior twin structures represented an iconic anchor for Lower Manhattan.
It's no surprise that there's wrangling in this go around with this site, since it had been controversial the first time, when the 16 acre site was consolidated, streets removed, and the superblock upon which the plaza and towers rested was created.
I was asking my hub the same thing-when will this be finished!!?You think it would be finished by now. I think they should have the exact look of the towers just like before--It isn't the same without the "skyline",,,,
I hear 2011 (since it was 9/11 now they want to have it done by 2011).
The documentaries are still so hard to freakin watch on History Channel.
