Hi!

I was wondering if anyone could share their experiences with the Animal Medical Center in Manhattan.

I have two chihuahuas and am thinking of transferring them to our old vet who has relocated there.

The vet used to be at Manhattan Veterinary Group on East 80th Street. We had our older female chihuahua spayed there and they did teeth, also for well under 400 dollars.

Since then we have transferred our pets to St. Mark's Vet Hospital but are not super happy with the services there. Nothing too horrible just love our old vet and she finally has a new clinic to work at. They quoted us nearly 600 for teeth extraction/neuter for our younger male chi.

Animal Medical Center is now quoting in that neighborhood or even up to 1000 plus! This is a simple neuter/teeth cleaning and extraction!

Does anyone find this exhorbitant or high?
Should I bite the bullet and go for AMC?

Hmmm...those are not uncommon prices in NYC, in my experience.

The AMC is the teaching hospital of the veterinary school of Cornell University. As such, your animal will be cared for not only by your own vet who transferred (who would be the supervising attending), but also by the housestaff, who are graduates of multiple vet schools, as well as vet students (but they're always supervised by the attending). They use the same system as in hospitals for people.

I have had so-so experience at the AMC - some good, some not so good. If you already have a relationship with a vet and you know and trust her, I would give it a whirl. It's not cheap, but in my experience NOTHING in NYC is cheap. And for a neuter AND a dental, that's not really that bad!!!

Thanks for your helpful and encouraging answer!

Can you elaborate on the bad experiences at AMC? Is there anything I should be on the look-out for?
