I just accepted a position at Bronx Lebanon hospital and found a great apartment in riverdale (right across from the 1 bus). How safe are the buses in this area to ride. I am relocating from the midwest and was a little overwhelmed by the prospect of an hour long bus ride to go 5 miles.
I live in Riverdale across from the 9 bus. the buses are safe, it might be a bit intimidating at first to ride with those from the poorer areas if you're not amongst them and the buses can get crowded around rush hours, but the buses are safe. the worst that can be said is when they get crowded it can be unpleasant
you could also switch at some point to the D train and take it to 174th-175th street which would make for a quicker ride
Or even better, take the Bx1 to Mosholu then the 4 train to Mount Eden (although you have to walk up the hill). However, if you ride the Bx1 south of Mosholu Pkwy, prepare for a slow ride because many people prefer the bus over the D train (due to safety and the use of cell phones).
It's great that people are offering you potentially shorter rides by switching to the subway so you know the options you have. But also consider, once you get on the bus heading toward the hospital, you probably will have a seat (keeping fingers crossed but you are closer to the start of the route) and you can relatively relax for the hour commute (at least going toward work). You will have the least amount of walking to/from your transportation and that might be nice when considering it's a new environment (maybe not as nice as you are used to) and the possible elements of weather you will be dealing with. Hey, once you feel more comfortable, you can switch it up and see which way you prefer. Good luck in your new job!!

Although you may have a seat on the Bx1 bus, you can also get a seat on the 4 (at Mosholu) and on the D (at Bedford Park Blvd). And the trains are quicker rides.

It's interesting how many of these type of posts we get on this forum. They usually always start so and so got a position at insert random Bronx hospital. Is it safe?
It seems a little off to me that it would take you an hour to get from one place to the other within the Bronx. There has to be either a quicker bus route, or a combination of bus with train that you haven't figured out yet.
The city should seriously think about implementing a bus-only lane along the concourse too (similar to what they did on Fordham Road). The concourse is more than wide enough to accommodate it.
Well, just for the bus alone, I think an hour would fit, especially when one factors all the traffic lights and stops along the route.
I'm not familiar with that exact bus route, but maybe it has a limited route, which makes less stops. Most of the busier lines do.
