My friend and I looked at an apartment yesterday on 94th between 1st and 2nd (closer to 1st). I know there are PJs around there, and I don't know anyone else who lives up that high, so I'm low on people to ask. I think I might have a higher tolerance for taht kind of stuff (ie I don't think I would be uncomfortable walking through the PJs - I come from a working class town), but my roommate was definitely worried. But now she's got me worried, and I feel I should think it over more. I'm a white fairly preppy young girl and so is she - am I underestimating the sketch factor? I used to work in Bushwick a few years ago and I felt ok with that, though to be fair I wasn't around at night. Has/does anybody live there or know it well enough to give advice?
If your worried don't move there. Why would you want to live someplace you clearly can't tolerate or don't feel comfortable in?
I don't have stats to back this up, but I would estimate that living near the projects greatly increases your chances of being a victim of crime. Whether your White, Black, Brown, or polka-dotted.
It isnt at all that I cant tolerate it or I don't feel comfortable. That's the problem - I feel fine. I'm asking if it's stupid to feel fine. Obviously that doesn't mean I'd be wandering the streets wearing miniskirts and flashing money at midnight (or any time for that matter). The reason I'm asking is becuase this apartment is GREAT, and the neighbors that I met seemed nice, and the price is right. Do you think I'm just being foolhardy thinking that I'd be ok?

Well in the end its your choice and everyone has different comfort/tolerance levels. Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable living right near the PJ's. But again that's my comfort level not yours.

Even though you'll be near to pj's that part of town is pretty safe. It's still considered part of the UES. Tons of conveniences, buses, a decent walk to the subway on Lex, many working middle income folks around.
BTW, it's not stupid to feel fine. That would make the people who walk around with sour dispositions geniuses, won't it? And you can wear your miniskirt - but only if you're pretty and I'm around.
Thanks everyone for the reassurance -- I would feel terrible for my roommate if we wound up someplace that would be objectively considered 'scary' by most people just because I have a higher tolerance for that kind of stuff and don't think its so bad.

maybe it's just me but the only time i find the area in question to be scary is if it's halloween or i'm looking in a mirror as i stroll along to catch the crosstown bus.

I don't think this is true for all projects. I used to live by projects in Woodside and it was completely fine! And I am a white girl!
I think that area is fine, but yes, there are projects. If you don't feel comfortable, you shouldn't do it. You should feel safe and comfortable where you live. Walk around during the day and at night and see how you feel. Good luck!
