My experience with AMC is that you should deal only with the most senior members of the faculty there and make sure they are the ones treating your animal. AMC trains a lot of young vets and you don't want them doing the surgery on your animal. I haven't had cataract surgery there but have taken my cats there for other issues.
Also, for what it is worth, the care is really great. There isn't another place like it.
If I were you I would go to the PetCo in Union Square and go to the back on the left and talk to the ladies who run the cat rescue there. (6 to 9pm most days) They know the ins and outs on feline medical care in the city and will be able to give you a great advice on the subject. Good luck!
I've dealt with some great drs at the AMC (my Scotty had FIV)...I agree....they do train a lot of new drs.....There is also another place that has an amazing rep...and of course I don't know where it is...It's in the 50s I want to say? Anyone?
All the residents are supervised by attendings. There are two ophthalmology attendings there- I'm familiar with Dr. Aquino, who does my dog's annual ophtho exams.
