Looking at an apartment in the area and I will be coming home often late at night (between 2 and 5 a.m.). Is it going to be relatively safe walking three or four short blocks from 116th or 125th?

Four blocks at 4am is not really a short walk. Are you male or female? Will you be walking from the 2/3 train? The area you are talking about is usually pretty crowded and safe, but not really at the hours you are talking about. I would not want to have to frequently walk 4 blocks at those hours in that area.

What other areas of town have you looked in? What is your budget?

I wouldn't do it if you will be coming home that late on a regular basis.

I wouldn't do it. At least not on a regular basis. Pretty much anywhere in the city that late at night you are taking a chance. Add in a marginal or bad neighborhood and it just makes it worse.

I'm a man and I work late, but I don't think you'd have a problem with living there. Even at 3am there are often people getting off the 2/3 with you at 116 and 125.

There's actually more street life above 125 though, as it's more commercial up further. 120th area has more large brownstones with residential facing Lenox, and a couple churches. But I'd consider it a safe area late at night.

Hey gp, I trust you will check it out for yourself a couple of times in the wee hours before you sign any papers! I come home from work late, too, and I wouldn't dream of pushing my luck up there ... but that's your call.
