97th St 3rd Ave Manhattan - What are the shops like in this area? Is there anywhere near here that sells cheap bedding and kitchenware. Our daughter arrives in NYC this week and need to kit herself out as the apartment she is living in for the next few months provides a bed, fridge and microwave and little else!

Honestly, nothing is 'cheap' in NYC. She can try Bed, Bath & Beyond, but be prepared - nothing is really cheap.

Bed Bath and Beyond would be fine. Is there one in that area or something similar? She just needs to buy basics as her suitcase space is limited, (strange how she seems to have fitted in numerous pairs of shoes though!) and everything she buys will have to be left behind when she returns to the U.K.

There is a Bed Bath & Beyond on East 61st Street. There are also lots of other places to find things like this inexpensively, including thrift stores, Fish's Eddie, K-Mart, Surprise Surprise (east village), Pearl River (Soho), etc.

That's great - thank you. I will tell her to lookout for these places.

I would disagree with that. It's more like nothing is cheap in certain areas. You can get pretty much anything in discount or 99 cent stores these days, and a lot of it is not necessarily bad quality. Don't think there are any discount stores in that area though. I'm sure there are a few of them just a bit north from where the OP was talking about.

In the ones that don't sell strictly 99 cent, you can find actual metal cutlery these days, and even in the 99 cent ones they sell loose cutlery for 99 cent a pop.

Thanks NooYokur. I'll be needing some new knives as my ex used up all the ones on me whenever I came home - and not to prepare a meal for me but to charge at me!

I'll be checking out those 99 cent stores. Even if they carry metal, I'll be doing plastic for my next girlfriend!!!!

Do NOT buy kitchen supplies at a dollar store. They won't last.

Far and away the best deals on kitchen stuff are at the restaurant supply stores on the Bowery. You can just Google "Bowery Restaurant Supply." Also see the Times article (http://www.nytimes.com/2007/05/09/di...gewanted=print).
