I know this is a long time ago but thought I should comment.I agree with you on diverse area and I am also looking into those areas,my budget is (800 -1500) that is for rent with heat and hot water.
I was looking at Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights as well. I am curious as a black matured female would I stand out in Astoria and where did you decide to go and how is that working? I am international black female student and I am concern about safety and fitting in.

as a couple of people have said you should check out Astoria as far as safety/commute. I love brooklyn but my knowledge on Brooklyn is limited.
