Hello Frens,

I am fresh out of residency and have been offered a job with a group practice with work at Bronx Lebanon Hospital. I live in lower manhattan but looking to move out of here soon enough. Is it safe to be working in that area? My day wud typically end maybe around 7-8 (I hope) and latest by 9 ( I hoe). I really need sincere opinions on this. I am a female and have a one year old kid. Should I accept or let this opportunity go? I have to really let them know ASAP now!

Thanks a bunch!

I'm not too familiar with the area today but I do know a friend who works there as a counselor and he commutes from Queens and has never complained. I think Super Mario can give some good insight on that part of town.

If you're driving it shouldn't be too bad: you can park in a lot across the street.

If you know someone who knows someone who's already in the Einstein system, ask to talk to him/her about it. That's really the only way of knowing.

And things sometimes appear worse than they really are: I went to medical school at Columbia and lived in the neighborhood. It wasnt' the Gold Coast on Park Avenue, but it wasn't the black hole of Calcutta, either. I went back to do my fellowship and was in the subway there at 4AM and at 8 or 9PM to go home. Not the best place in the world, but nothing ever happened to me riding the train or going through that 168th Street station. The vast majority of people, like in every neighborhood, are honest people who are just trying to get by.

thanks for your response. i don't have a car right now. will be taking subway 4 to Burnside avenue or 4 then D to tremont avenue staion. do you think taking subways at odd hours around 179th street and grand concourse is ok too? Columbia is a pretty good neighborhood from what I know, isn't it?

No, the medical school and Presbyterian Hospital are in the middle of Washington Heights. It's not safe. Really. They still have security staff escort students living on Haven Avenue (in Columbia Housing) and in the neighborhood home at night.

WHOA! didn't know that. Hmmmm... this is a tough decision for me.. haven't been to the bronx otherwise but during my 2-3 visits to the medical office and hospital it seems pretty ok.. of course I have only been there in broad daylight. To accept or not to accept.. that is the question.. boo hooo..

If you are afraid of taking the subway, then take some buses. Or a combination of both. Buses tend to feel safer since you can be in an open view of the driver.

You can always take the express bus from/to there. The BxM4A/B stops on Grand Concourse & Mt. Eden Av. and runs in Manhattan northbound along Madison(starting at 26th) and southbound via 5th Av(terminating at 26th St.). It does run late into the evening(last bus towards Manhattan stops at the hospital around 11pm).

You'll be fine. Its not that bad. If it was then plenty of other staff at the hospital probably would not have taken the job.
