Hi everyone, my brother moved in a few weeks ago and he's been looking to get a job in prety much any place that's hiring. He's been from Loews to Gamestop to small stores, but nothing yet. He doesn't feel like doing waitering since he believes its a long shot (no experience in waitering) and doesn't think that some small stores or record shops are hiring. Any advice? What should he do? Craigslist? Dog walk in the cold weather :s ?

Get certified as an EMT. Short as 3 months, long as 6. Immediate job placement once certified. Program is about $1000($600 when I got certified). Recession proof and NYC needs more EMTs. Otherwise, try this: http://www.nyc.gov/html/sbs/wf1/html/home/home.shtml

He's 20 years old, sudied for a year in University of Toronto and was to expensive to continue, so he moved in with me and will work (if he can) for a while until he goes to a school from CUNY. He's worked in American Apparel, Gameplanet, and a painting company called College Pro Painters. He's not looking for anything specific, just anything! But most of the employee's say "not right now, but you can leave a resume", any advice?

if you want a job in NYC, you need connections

but his best bet would still be restaurants, hotels, bars, because they always have high turnovers

Check the link I provided? He goes to one of their centers and he'll find lots of jobs that are currently hiring. Your brother is not going to find much in big-name retail stores right now, but there's always an exception to the rule. For example, I just found a few jobs at my local Toys 'R Us. "So I say to you: Keep asking, and it will be given you. Keep searching, and you will find. Keep knocking, and the door will be opened for you."

Would he consider driving car service? My cousin used to own one and he said they always had great drivers during a bad economy. They had trouble filling cars during good times.

If he's planning to attend CUNY I would suggest taking the civil service exam and getting a CUNY Office Assistant position. They completely cover college tuition and have excellent benefits. He can fill out an online application ($30) here: http://portal.cuny.edu/cms/id/cuny/d...E/examsTOC.htm. The downside is that the starting salary is below $30K, but it's not bad if he's going to school and living with you.

Qualifications for the position are quite low, all you need is a high school diploma. Experience and additional education definitely improves ones chances of landing a job.

And don't forget the civil service. Check the Chief-Leader regularly for exams!
