I am stuck in the Jersey City area (Kearny) until Monday and have never visited Manhattan. I thought while I was here for a day I would like to see Times Square. I have called some cab services and fell out of my chair when they quoted fares anywhere from $55-$70 one-way. Can you guys suggest other, more affordable modes of transport to get from this area to Times Square? Any ideas? Thank in advance!

take the train or bus in. I'm sure there is a bus from Kearny to NYC or go to Jersey city and take the path train in.

Go to Newark Penn Station and take NJ Transit into NYC. It's $8 round trip (I think) + cab fare to Newark Penn Station (if you have no other way to get to Newark). Don't limit yourself to Times Sq if you have the whole day.

Thanks for the suggestions. The Penn Station idea sounds better...that would be rail service, right? That's about the same price for a bus ride over, so I'd rather opt for the train. What else would you suggest for a first timer to see within walking distance? Thanks again for the responses

Yup, it's rail service. You'd buy a ticket to go to New York Penn Station which is located at 33rd & 8th Ave.

Walking distance? With the subway the whole city is within walking distance. You can buy an unlimited day pass for less then $10.

Things to do? Depends on what your interests are... here are some suggestions and I'm sure others will chime in.

Central Park
Central Park Zoo
Have lunch at Katz's Deli, Carnegie Deli, or any other place that you may find interesting.
World Trade Center site (although some may argue that it's just a construction project now).
Wall Street
Empire State Building
Ride on the subway (if your in NYC you have to take at least one subway ride, it's an unofficial requirement).

NYC is the type of place that you either love or hate. I think you'll love it based on your curiosity alone.

Have fun!

Thanks iGlenn. Good suggestions. I think the ride to the Empire State Blg is a must, How much is it to go up to the top? I guess I can Google it. I have been to parts of Queens and LI, for work related stuff, but never had the chance to get into Manhattan. I am alone, a 30 year old guy, just wanting to sight see and get some photos (hence the ESB). Is it best to travel without a wallet? Maybe just cash and ID? Any other quick tips for a guy visiting the city for a day? Thanks again for the tips, I look forward to getting out there tomorrow, as long as I can navigate the transit system. I have checked the NJ Transit website for the specifics.

You'll be fine with your wallet. Just put it in your front pants pocket if your still a little uncertain.

No other suggestions. Just have fun and enjoy the city.

If you have a way to get several blocks south of Kearny to Harrison, you can take the PATH train ($1.50) to Lower Manhattan in just 20 minutes. Once you get to Lower Manhattan, you can transfer to the 1/2 or A/C trains ($2) that will bring you up to Times Square. It's not a long trip at all, and you will be safe with your wallet. I live in NYC, regularly take the subways and the PATH trains, and always feel safe.

just find your way to Newark Penn Station and take the PATH. You can take it to the World Trade Center and take the A-C-E uptown. Or you can change at Journal Square for the 33rd street train and walk from 33rd and sixth. Trip should not take more than 45 minutes and you'll save a lot of money as it will be 3.50 round trip.

Took the PATH over to Manhattan and walked up to Times Square, up to Rock Plaza, then down part of 5th Ave. We grabbed some spicy hot dogs and watched a model photo-shoot. Thanks for the replies, it helped me save a lot of $$. Now time to plan at least a whole weekend to come back and spend some time here.
