Yea it's pretty hood. There's Vanderveer Projects which is right off Nostrand. Basically the further east you go from Nostrand, the worst it gets and the further west from Nostrand the better.

West as in Nostrand Ave --> Flatbush Ave --> Coney Island Ave --> Ocean Parkway --> New Utrecht Ave, etc. You can check out this Google Maps Image of what I'm referring to:

Nostrand Ave & Newkirk Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11226 - Google Maps

I used to live close to that area. I had moved in during the winter so i didn't see any of the chaos that goes on. I didn't find out until march/april that it was a bad area and during the summer it's one long ghetto party.

Tough area...lots of gangs and young thugs. As you head more down towards Brooklyn College there is a big improvement but where you are asking about is not very safe.

You're worldly, but you can't figure out that the huge outer boroughs contain various neighborhoods both good and bad? That's a pretty low bar for worldly, isn't it? What parts of the outer boroughs have you actually seen?

Isn't that Flatbush? It's a mostly carribbean area....you know...people from Trinidad, Jamaica, Virgin Islands, Barbados, Haiti...etc...

All I can say is don't expect to get any sleep during the month of September.

As for ghetto....it is a little on the rough side.
