Hi,

Please help us, we´re looking at apts in Manhattan, since we have a car we´re also looking at garages/private garages/parking spaces (doesn´t have to be a garage, could be a driveway or the like) that is within a budget of 150 US dollars/mo. Is it impossible? Where should we look?
Any advise is greatly appreciated, tx.

$150 is a tough price for parking in Manhattan, and the only places where you could even come close to that price for a commercial lot (which is recommended for several reasons) would be way up in Harlem on the river. A garage, even in a slightly more out of the way locale is going to be a tad higher.

At $200-$225, more opens up, including open lots on the west side that are not that inconvenient (I want to say there's one on 59th St near the river that's under $200), but with a Manhattan registered vehicle, you will pay the lower monthly rate because of lower taxes on a resident's vehicle.

Around $200, you might find a commercial garage in Inwood, though I'd confine that to west of Broadway, or on Broadway itself. There's a garage not far from the Broadway Bridge in Inwood that's also close to the subway. There are open lots in this area as well, though some of them back on the train yard.

One thing to compare, however, is your car insurance. Some companies will have a surcharge if the vehicle is in an open lot, but if it's in an attended commercial garage, your rate may be lower. So, while you may pay more monthly for the garage, and may have to travel to Inwood, you have the possibility of coming out with a lower overall cost if the insurance company gives a discount for the garage. The other reason why you want a commercial garage is that there is someone responsible for the vehicle when you are not there. When a vehicle is parked at someone's house in their driveway or a rented garage where you are not the tenant of the dwelling unit, there could be an issue in the event of a loss, since the homeowner's insurance does not carry the same level of protection as a commercial garage's liability insurance.

It can be a headache in the event of a loss while on private residential property as you do not have a commercial insurance carrier with whom your insurance company can settle a potential loss while the vehicle is in the care of the garage. If there were to be a fire, theft, damage, etc, there are protections that being parked in an attended 24-hour garage give you, hence why you might get a lower insurance quote for a garage as opposed to an open lot, and probably a whole lot less than storing the vehicle at a residence where you do not rent the apartment.

Your car is registered to your home address, not where it's parked, but the insurance company must know where it's parked, and the type of arrangement, if it's not at your residence. That's why I would recommend checking into a lower-cost commercial garage, probably in Inwood, or if your insurance carrier charges the same for an open lot, look for one that's convenient, but by all means get one that's attended 24-7.

You can check Best Parking for some rates in various neighborhoods, but the better deals are generally on the west side, and upper Upper Manhattan. Hope that helps. Good luck.

Overall, unless you absolutely HAVE to have a car, it's easier to rent a Zipcar when you need one. They have hourly rates and overall are quite reasonable and there are cars all over Manhattan.
