Hello nice people,
I've landed a good job in Manhattan. I'm in my 20's and looking to move to a decent neighborhood that is walking distance from the metro. Safety is everything to me. I have a car too, so looking for an apartment that has parking spaces. My price range is $1000 - $1400 - I want a 1 bedroom.

Any advice will really help.

Moving from Maryland.

Forget Manhattan.

You'll have to look in the outer boroughs: Queens, Brooklyn, or the Bronx for something in that price range. You will also have to park on the street as few rental buildings (outside of expensive Manhattan ones) have parking. Those that do have it probably charge a couple of hundred per month and have long waiting lists.

You can probably find a nice one bedroom in Queens or Brooklyn (don't know anything about the Bronx) in your range. Where in Manhattan is your job? That could be the deciding factor on which borough you choose.

Oh dear. I think you'll need to ditch the car, number one, and then start looking in the boroughs, Queens, the Bronx and parts of Brooklyn and Staten Island.

You will have to look into northern manhattan for those prices

it is a better deal anyways because the rooms are bigger and the local amenities are cheaper

you cannot have a car though

I agree with the others, Manhattan is out of the question. Now, you can find a fairly nice 1 BR in Jersey for that price. $2,000 for a 1BR will allow you to live like a king in Hoboken. That's where you want to be. All the hot young professional ladies are shacking up in hoboken. But you can find a very nice 1BR for that price in north jersey...check out essex county, morris county, etc...depends on how far away you want to live. keep the car and take NJ transit into the city. you will need the car in jersey.

Washington Heights and Inwood are good possibilities, but you'll either have to pay for a lot or park your car on the street.

I agree with the people recommending upper Manhattan...but if what you're really looking for is being close to the "action" as it were, you might as well get a place in Queens that will get you to midtown quickly or in Brooklyn that will get you downtown quickly.
