any favorite restaurant in the east 50s? (Maine, Madison: restaurants, food)

I have been researching some of Manhattans eateries on menupages.com and I am kind of discouraged. So many have unfavorable comments either about food or service. We most likely would be eating mostly at those that are 3$. as most of those 4$ are very expensive. Some of the time we will surely do the deli thing too. Anyone have a favorite breakfast spot. At some point we will be in the area of the Metropolitan Museum so if anyone can make recommendation in the E 80s, that would be great too. We are staying in the Third Ave and 53rd East area.

Tao on 58th & Madison is great..maybe kinda expensive though
