What is the area like? Is a good place to purchase a home? I will be making an offer this week. The house is in good condition and a great price, but I am reading that it is considered East New York. I hear that is not a good place to live. I don’t want to move from the BX to move to a bad area… Any comments?

Whoever told you that Nichols Avenue is in East New York doesn't know Brooklyn very well! It runs between the cemetery belt and Atlantic Avenue a few blocks west of the border with Queens. If anything, it should be considered either Cypress Hills or City Line. You might be pleasantly surprised!
One question does occur to me, though: if you're making an offer and you're that unfamiliar with the area, shouldn't you go there and see it with your own eyes first?
Nichols Avenue is technically Cypress Hills. I dont know why they don't simply call it Sheridan Avenue, but I wouldn't recommend the area, It's pretty run down and ghetto, and F K Lane high school is near by.
Nichols Avenue is in City Line it is a subsection of East New York. But it is not the "bad" part of East New York (don't know if that is saying much). It looks like a rundown and poor area. It has its share of crime but it is a little better than the rest of East New York . The area runs into Woodhaven Queens . Where in the Bronx do you live? Because it might not be worth moving to Nichols Ave.
This is Cypress Hills, a part of East New York. It's OK but not that different from the Bronx. Actually, it's a lot like the Bronx. The J and Z trains run in that area, perhaps you could take a look at the area before you commit to anything.
Thanks everyone for your replies. I did go and see the area of course... but wanted more input. I decided not to buy and got out of the contract... it was a great deal and the house was really nice, but after driving around the area at night I was not happy…
