Hi NYC CD folks. Need your suggestions on an evening itineary for a few mid-40 to late-40 yr old folks. We have colleagues gathering in Westchester for a business meeting the wk of Aug 17. We have Monday evening open to get in to the city to get a taste of Manhattan. We'll be taking the train in from Rye. We're looking to pop in to a few bars for cocktails/eats and walk around and take in the vibe of NYC. Any specific neighborhood suggestions? Which mode of transportation would you suggest once we get to Grand Central? Taxi, Subway? Thanks, in advance. We're really looking forward to an evening in Manhattan.

You could go to the Oyster Bar/Restaurant located in Grand Central station.

It depends upon your destination from Grand Central as to the best mode of transportation, and time of day. During rush hours, cross-town traffic can be horrible, so it's actually faster to walk to some destinations as opposed to the cab route. Buses have bus only lanes on certain streets/avenues, so they can get through the traffic faster on the surface. The subway can work too, just expect it to be a little crowded, but from Grand Central, you have easy access to most parts of the city, so it might be the best.

If you want a place with a view and don't mind spending a little on drinks, I'd suggest someplace like MO Bar in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel (Time Warner Center - Columbus Circle). Closer to Grand Central, if you want a great Italian meal, I'd suggest Felidia, but it can get expensive with drinks and dinner. For someplace that's historic, you might want to look into Fraunces Tavern in Lower Manhattan and then take the subway up to Times Square or Midtown to have dessert. You could be gastronomic nomads, drinks in one area, dinner in another, and dessert/sightseeing in yet another. It's all easy to accomplish in a city like NY.

Do you have any particular types of cuisine or price range or something like a stunning view that you'd like to incorporate?

Thanks a ton for your responses. We won't be getting into the city until about 9 - 9:30pm and will be able to stay until the last (or next to) last train back. (1am or so). Places like the MO Bar and Fraunces Tavern sound like places of interest. I guess something with a "neat" setting/view is what we are after. We're open to spending a little extra in order to take in the unique sites of the city. I'm thinking all will have had dinner prior to us meeting up so dessert places or bars/taverns where we can get munchies would be all the food we would be looking for. We're coming from various cities across the country, and on different schedules, so I didn't want to plan a dinner reservation that evening.

Again, thanks for responding. Please forward any other thoughts. You're a great help.

You're welcome. One of the best views in the city is Top of The Rock, which is close to Grand Central, at the top of the GE Building which is 30 Rockefeller Plaza. It's on 5th between 49th & 50th Streets, and it's open until midnight, though the last elevator is an hour before closing. The view is great, and gives a wonderful perspective on the city, but there's no bar at the top, so you'd have to find a place for dessert/pub fare either before or after the trek to the top. This might not be a bad option if you were to find a great place that may not have a view, yet you would have a stunning view as part of the evening.

For an outdoor space that's not too far afield, you might consider the Local West Cafe, which is on W33rd at 8th Avenue, near Madison Square Garden. The Gansevoort Hotel, in the Meatpacking District (9th Ave & 13th St) also has an outdoor space with views, but it can be very busy, and is uber-hip.
