The major problem now is that paralegals are competing with law school graduates for the same jobs.

What jcoltrane said about making mistakes is spot on. There is no room to screw up in this town, and no one wants to hear your excuses if you do. Forget about calling in sick. There is no such thing as a sick paralegal in a busy firm. You are either dead or at your desk, working.

Cleave thyself unto a partner, not an associate, lol. Become their everything.

Temping is the best way to get your foot in the door.

Not just graduates; these days, even those licensed to practice at the bar.

Yes, it is. Though, its still hard to break in. No agency is going to send you on a job, unless they are sure you're not going to screw up! The only way they're going to know you're not going to screw up, is to send you on a job!
