It will be very difficult to find a studio in Manhattan for this price. I know since I am looking too.
I decided to search in Brooklyn or Queens. Look for express trains (subway) no more than 4 stations from Manhattan. New York City Subway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fare is $2,25 -one way !
Should I start looking for a job first and see what a typical salary is before I make any decisions? I have abt 7 months to save and look for a job, my lease ends at the beginning of April.

^It's only $2.25 one way if you buy individual tickets. It gets cheaper if you buy more rides or if you buy some form of unlimited metrocard and use it enough.
In theory, since there are 43,200 minutes in a 30-day month and you can swipe an unlimited metrocard once every 18 minutes, you could have 2,400 rides each month for $103. This would equate to a ride on the subway costing $.04 each.
Not that I really have any interest in property searching for others, but if people can't find a Manhattan studio in the current rental market under $2,000 you are not looking hard enough.

I don't need any amenities, for me I will sacrifice those amenities to live in manhattan. My dream is to have a 30 min or less commute to work everyday and have the ability to walk if I really had to. I'd like to be within walking distance of a grocery store, laundry, and possible a gym. The only thing I don't want to sacrifice is my safety.
For $1400 you can definitely get a nice large studio apt. in Queens in a good neighborhood within walking distance of subway, a grocery store & other amenities. A lot of apt. bldgs. have washing machines & dryers in their basements. I don't know if it is possible to find this in Manhattan.
