Hi,

I am a recent finance graduate from west coast (Seattle area) and currently looking for jobs here.
However, sometime in near future I may have an option to consider a relocation to the NY area.
How are the finance job opportunities at NY in the current market? Am I better off staying in Seattle or relocating to NY area.

Thanks
GMan

Stay in Seattle. There are no high finance jobs here - Lehman, Bear, Merrill etc. Plus no New York experience vs all of these ivy league grads that worked at these banks and are currently living off of their bonus and severance money while applying for the same jobs you are? Don't even think about it.

What type of position are you looking for in Finance? Depending on what your looking for can determine how difficult it might be for you to find a job here. Obviously mortgage-related businesses are still weak and rare, but I've noticed that jobs are picking up a little bit. There have been companies who are starting to hire more, even the big ones that had announced large layoffs. I've also heard that with a couple of the companies, they laid off too many people and now don't have enough resources to handle the work, and re-hiring some people back and opening up new positions as well. So it does sound like things are getting better.

However, for the ones that are open externally, there are still plenty of competition. Many people were laid off and not all have found new jobs so there will be some experienced people you might be competing against, but it's not to say it's impossible.

I say send out your resume to many companies and see what happens. Although the job market is far from recovered, some companies are starting to hire again. No harm done by sending out resumes and job hunting. Good luck!
