Possibly stores that are usually open 24/7.

Depends on what kind of shops. Grocery and liquor stores, generally yes. Other retailers, probably not.

I don't know where you are, but here in Manhattan, everything is shut tight. Even the supermarket.

I'm in Brooklyn. Made a run to the liquor store and corner deli this morning.

Some stores are opening for at least part of Thanksgiving. I believe all KMarts are open and I think Wal-Mart (though there are none in the 5 boros) are too. It's pretty sad, I used to think that Thanksgiving and Christmas were the two days that were "sacred" in terms of even stores being closed and people were with those near and dear (I'm Jewish and even my folks closed their convenience store on Christmas thinking there'd be little business anyway......often we'd be invited by a non-Jewish neighbor or friend to their house for their holiday gathering and have a nice time so it wasn't a dull day by any means (many of whom did vice versa and visited us during Passover)! My dad came to America from Europe just before WW II and one of the great things he thought about this country and NY in particular is the opportunity for everyone to enjoy a piece of everyone else's culture without it causing a war).

I remember several years ago the newspaper ad by P.C. Richards blasting the Wiz for opening on Thanksgiving and denying their employees the day with their families, I wish you'd see more of that spirit now. Have a happy everyone!

For too many store owners in NYC, Thanksgiving is just another Thursday to them. Mod cut: not necessary

A lot of stuff in my Manhattan neighborhood was closed, but the grocery store was open till around 5pm, and the bodega was open all night (I don't think they ever close). And last Thanksgiving, I ended up having to do some housework, and I went to at least two hardware stores in my neighborhood; they were both open. So I think your experience is abnormal.

99.5% of stores are closed on Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day.
This includes all of the U.S., and NYC.
