I am a 30 year old father of a 6 year old boy and a 4 year old girl. My wife and I will be moving to New York City for work in a few months. We are looking for a safe neighborhood with good schools and decent prices for homes. I will be working in Manhattan but I am ok with commuting in for work. Any information you can share with me would be greatly appreciated.
There are no areas with decent prices for homes that are in good commuting distance to Manhattan and have good schools. But I guess it depends on your definition of decent. What's yours?
I would look into the suburbs. Being originally from Queens, I would say there are plenty of places that are an easy commute to the city with decent schools. Though I'm less familiar with it, Brooklyn should have similar areas.
I think the major question is the "decent" price of a home: I think "decent" is relative.
If you have a family I would consider New Jersey or Long Island. New Jersey has a shorter commute to Manhattan and for most NJ cities and towns has lower taxes.
You could also consider Westchester or Connecticut to the north.
Give us more information on your budget, desired commute time, etc...
Our budget for an apartment would be between $2000-$3000. As far as a commute goes I am good with riding the train or subway for 30-60 minutes as long as I know that my family is safe and that there are good quality schools for my kids to attend
I say Westchester will be perfect or even Nassau county
