Does anyone know of any furniture shop that is not expensive and delivers to upper east side manhattan? (my guess is any furniture shop in that area would be expensive, so is there any in other areas but delivers to UES for not-too-high delivery fee?) Thanks for any tips.

Housing Works on 77th Street is a great re-sale shop and all proceeds go to NYC charities. It's where the UES folks dump their "outdated" furnishings. You have to stalk the place to catch the new deliveries, but I have seen nice sofas with down cushions (waay nicer than Ikea quality) for $250, small dining tables & chairs for $150, entire dish sets for $50, etc.

There are also some less expensive places along 3rd Ave in the low 60's and in the upper 80's. Pier 1 often has inexpensive furniture on 3rd and 87th-ish.

If you live in a walk-up building what floor do you live on? That is a major factor in pricing furniture delivery. You need a man with van service. OnCraigslist, look under services,labor/move. Get a few estimates beforehand. I guarantee you will get a lower price then any other furniture store.

Check out the furniture stores in Chinatown, they have good prices and generally free delivery and assembly...
