If neither you nor your roommates are involved with any criminals or criminal activity, then the area's not too bad.

East of Broadway is not as safe as WEST of Broadway.

That's actually Wash Heights. Once you pass the 155th border your in Washington Heights. It's not a great area, but I wouldn't call it particularly unsafe either, just extremely busy, hectic, and loud (especially in the summer, forget it). That area always ranks high when they measure the loudest neighborhoods. I think it's mostly because 155 is pretty busy intersection and 145 also very busy is not very far away, also NY Presbyterian is nearby and that creates tons of noise too...

It's not a bad area..I was raised in 157th street and Broadway..you'll always see people in the streets..one of the main reasons you won't be harmed..

I'm at 153rd and Amsterdam, and I think the area is totally okay. In this area the general guideline is that everything west of St. Nicholas Ave is fine. East of St. Nick is some sketchy projects where I wouldn't want to live. But that area of Broadway is just fine!

It's all good and well to ask people what they think of any neighborhood. But the best thing to do is go there and see how you feel. After all, you're the one who's thinking about moving there. You should never let anyone else tell you whether or not a particular neighborhood is "good," "bad," "safe," or anything else.
