I will be moving to NYC in about a month. I intend to stay with friends for a few weeks while I find my own place. I know all of the rules about getting an apt in NYC...40 times rent, employment etc...
My question: How difficult is it to find a 6 month lease? I only ask because I have saved enough money to allow for 6 months of living expenses while searching for employment. Yes, I am moving without a job but I would be able to pay 6 months UP FRONT to a landlord which should exclude me from any employment verification etc...as long as they would agree to a six month lease. Will most landlords consider a situation like mine?
And please lets keep this thread limited to the six month lease question. I am very aware of rent prices in NYC...I have spent a lot of time in NYC...I have lots of friends in NYC so I know what I am getting myself into but none of my friends have looked into this type of lease before. I would just prefer to get my own place on a six month lease as opposed to subletting or finding a month to month...as I understand they are hard to find. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks
Subletting for six months will be easier. If you sublet, DO NOT pay six months up front!!! Pay one month at a time. Otherwise someone will take your money and disappear!
^^^what he said. Either sublet or share (i.e. take 1br in a 2/3/4br apt). If it's a nice place and/or somewhat discerning roommates, you may need to put up a 1-month deposit. But definitely pay rent month to month
