What is the demographic situation around the Steinway st. area in Queens (L.I.C.)? I also heard there are a lot of cops, does it mean it's very safe or very much crime-infested?

I really don't think anyone would ever use the word crime-infested with Steinway. That's a long strip though.. it's not that easy to generalize. Starting from the Astoria Blvd side going toward Broadway, it would be Egyptian on the first block, then it's a mix of Spanish, White, Black people...

It's Little Egypt from Astoria Blvd to 28th Ave, then it's mixed retail from 30th ave to Northern Blvd. There are many muslims living off of Steinway in the Little Egypt section, but a couple blocks north and south of Steinway in that section is still predominantly Greek and Italian. The best section to live off of Steinway is between 30th ave and 36th ave where you can take advantage of the wide variety of retail shops, restaurants, bars, cafes, gyms, modern condos and access to the R / V stop. Steinway is very safe, even in the dead of the night, I've never felt unsafe walking down any section of Steinway. 30th Ave to Northern Blvd is very diverse - you won't feel out of place no matter what your ethnicity is - and everyone really gets along and integrates well in the neighborhood. It's very family oriented and they have a lot of chain stores like Gap, Victoria Secret, Bathworks, Starbucks, Modells, all the fast food chains and banks, NYSC, cell phone shops and a number of mom and pop stores. They even shut down Steinway and a number of the avenues intersecting with it in the summer for big street and food fairs. Steinway has a really laid back, lazy Sunday afternoon vibe with lots of families and shopping. No crime issues at all.
