My wife and I are considering a move to NY. I'm finishing grad school and looking to take a job that would pay $125k/yr. My wife will be looking for a job. She makes $55k a year as a software trainer here in MI and would be looking for something similar in NY. We've been to NY a few times and loved it, but would only take the job if we could afford to live in Manhattan right to start. Being from MI, not having a car for a while sounds like fun. Could we afford it if she couldn't find a job right away?

It might seem a dumb question, but not being from NY it is hard to figure out what things actually cost. We have no kids, but plan to start trying after a year or two. We are thinking a 1BR in a good area. From what we read the UES seems like a good fit. I'm 36 and she is 30. So, were are not looking to bar hop every night. We don't need to be near the hottest nightlife...just some good markets, restaurants, and maybe a cool park...I hear NY has one. Much thanks for any help provided.

Yes, you can afford a one bedroom on $125k. I'm not a huge fan of the UES, but you tend to get more for your money there. Having children in Manhattan is really expensive. The cost difference between a one and a two or three bedroom is huge (and you also have to think about schools). You should move now and get your Manhattan fix out of the way before you have kids.
