Its fine. Between 1st and second aves. Bit of a walk to the train, but thats probably your biggest concearn here. (closest stop is 96th and lex) If the place is nice and the price is right, I say go for it.
Yep, the only drawback is the lack of immediate proximity to transportation, but the location is a good one. There are restaurants and conveniences on 1st, 2nd, and Lexington with a few blocks, too. At the end of the block, from 1st to the river is a public housing coplex, but it's a very low-key development and does not have any particular crime problem.

I use to live on E 95th just around the corner..Its a very nice area very young and very vibrant. Loads of nice places to eat and drink You are also near the 96th Street crosstown bus. Very Safe area at nite.
