Last night again at Astor Place. I noticed how HUGE the pedestrian area had grown at the price of auto-traffic streets.
My memory does go back to HS. That whole area used to be teeming with used book stores. Now, except for the Strand and one other, all gone.

You know what I DO like? That immense widening of Cooper Square going South of Astor Place. Trying to cross at 6th Street required an Act of Confession before stepping off the curb with cars and cabs shooting every which way. Now it is much more pedestrian friendly.
