It is really cute you can walk to downtown and only 40 mins from hubbys new job in Montvale..... looked at Montclair, Ramsey and HoHokus, could not find many single rentals in a decent price range, and it did seem busy... before we sign though, realtor mentioned Cold springs and Beacon to look at? We really like the Goshen one though.... any advice? We have an 11 yr old...

Welcome to the picturesque town/village of Goshen! Goshen is the county seat of Orange for a reason. Goshen has a really nice downtown area with many antique shops, places to eat, and a really great bike shop (get my bikes here!); nice bike trail from Goshen to Chester if you like this kind of thing! In fact, I am going to Goshen today to the weekly farmers market (every Friday). Really nice/fresh stuff available, probably the best village-hosted farmers market within Orange County, aside from the bigger Adams Fairacre Farms in Newburgh. Also, it is great to have Crystal Run Healthcare (large complex of all types of doctors located in Goshen) so close - only have to travel a mile or so to go to the doctor. Middletown is also right down the road and has all the shopping you likely need, as well as the Galleria At Crystal Run. Schools are solid; I never hear anything bad about Goshen Schools. Commute isn't too bad to Montvale - all highway. Your husband can take advantage of the cheaper NJ gas prices too!

Cold Spring and Beacon are nice Hudson Valley River towns (Putnam and Dutchess Counties, respectively), with the former being more upscale than the latter. Really easy train access to NYC. Average schools in Beacon and above average schools in Cold Spring (but you would be paying more - a lot more). Neither of these towns make sense for the commute, though. Montvale is west-of-Hudson, whereas both Cold Spring and Beacon are east of. He would have to cross the Hudson River each day via the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge if in Beacon, and the Tappan Zee Bridge or Bear Mountain Bridge in Westchester if in Cold Spring. Could certainly make for a hectic commute.

Anyway, welcome to Orange County! I have lived here for 17 years, so if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask!
