I may be considering a move to one of the following cities and would like to know, although this may sound odd to some, what the most popular local publication (newspaper/magazine) and radio/tv is so that I may become more familiar with the cities on the level as its citizens:
Albany
Binghampton
Buffalo
The Hudson Valley (Poughkeepsie/Beacon)
Rochester
Syracuse
I enjoy local newspapers and agree that they're a good way to get a feel for a city. Have you ever looked at newseum's site? On this page Newseum | Today's Front Pages | List View
there's images of the front pages and links to the websites of the major newspapers from most towns and cities. It's organized by state.
I see that for each of the cities you're mentioning there's one newspaper each: Times Union for Albany, no Binghamton paper but they have the Cortland Standard for Cortland, 30 minutes away, The Buffalo News for Buffalo, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle for Rochester and The Post-Standard for Syracuse.
For Hudson Valley there's a Westchester County paper, a Poughkeepsie paper and a Middletown paper (my brother-in-law lives 20 minutes from Beacon and that's the paper he gets)
For Rochester, I would say WHAM 1180 AM. It is basically a news station, not a music station. It is the station everyone tunes into for winter cancellations and is usually the number 1 or 2 rated station in town.
Newspaper: The Post-Standard (www.syracuse.com) Business Journal:CNY Business Journal (www.cnybj.com) News/Talk Radio Station: NewsRadio 570 WSYR (www.570wsyr.com) - local news updates are at the top and bottom of the hour Television News Station(s): ABC affiliate NewsChannel 9 (www.9wsyr.com) and Time Warner Cable 24 Hour News Channel YNN CNY (www.news10now.com) - the local news on the NBC and CBS affiliates is simply unwatchable and the stations have poor ratings to prove it.
