Looking at a relocation to the Owego area. We know nothing about the area. Talk to me about the areas. We are early 50's, grown kids, are active and love good restaurants and the like. We also both love winter. Where to look for housing? Any help is greatly appreciated.

There's really nothing I'd recommend in the immediate area. You might want to consider the Ithaca area, a 45 minute commute. You can find a nice house at a good price in Vestal, which is about a 15 minute commute but the Bingo area is drab and lacks the sophistication of Ithaca.
Good skiing at Greek Peak, which is near Ithaca in Cortland.
For a happy medium, besides Vestal, some may go with West and North(Little Italy) Endicott. Those areas are only about 15-20 minutes from Lockheed Martin or Downtown Binghamton. Village of Endicott New York - Home Page
Are you looking to rent first or to buy right away?

A couple of other areas that are worth a look if you don’t mind or want a more suburban environment in between Binghamton and Owego are Endwell and the northern portion of Johnson City(north of Route 17/I-86).
Also, there is some big box shopping in Vestal along Vestal Parkway and around Harry L. Drive in Johnson City. There is some north of Binghamton in Chenango as well.

If you want some quiet small town/country feel pick Tioga/southern Tompkins county. If you want snotty snobs who think they are the center of the universe, pick Ithaca.
Those of us from around that tiny piece of wannabe NYC tend to refer to Ithaca-Cornell as five miles of crazy surrounded by the real world.

I don't agree with your assessment of Ithaca. Just because it's the home of a world renowned institution doesn't make it "snobby."
If the OP would prefer a very short commute to Lockheed, suggest looking into Apalachin. It's a CDP within the town(ship) of Owego. Very reasonably priced homes. (Ignore its Mafia association.)
There's a famous diner, the "Blue Dolphin," there. Also close to "Tioga Downs" racing and gambling establishment.

I'm a life-long Ithaca resident and I would agree with their assessment! Too many Cornellians who came for college and forgot to leave after getting their diploma. Their presence and impact is not appreciated by us long term residents
As to the earlier question, I would agree that they should split the difference drive-wise. Stay in Northern Tioga so you don't get the Tompkins County tax burden but you're still within a reasonable commute in either direction.
