My brother and sister in law live in Warwick. They bought there to save a little money a few years ago, but still be within reach of NYC. They are both teachers, and they love it there. Real esate has gone up in the past couple years there, but where hasn't it? I've been there visiting and it's a beautiful place... I love the Inn that is there also. I think you made a good and wise choice.
Manhattan was my home for many years. I moved to Warwick when my husband died. I knew the place because my daughter lived nearby in Hewitt, NJ.
If there is racism here, I haven't seen it. There are people here of every stripe, great diversity in religion, race, politics. I have 3 outstanding new friends who are intellectual, highly individual and uninhibited. One of them happens to be African American.
Of course, in every area there are some racists, fanatics, etc., but I haven't met them. People of color around here seem to fit right in like anyone. Come live here, and look me up, LOL.
After being born in NYC and living there most of my life, I can tell you it's no joy. Great for a vacation, if you can afford it. Groceries cost 3 times as much, everyone is crowded everywhere, I counted 32 people on the line waiting to mail packages at my post office. Mentally ill people are on the streets, the hospitals release them as soon as they are not "a threat", but I think it's a threat to have a wild-haired woman come up to me and insist I am "Margaret"...
The streets smell of dog leavings, especially in Spring and Summer. The restaurants, if you can afford upwards of $30 for a single diner's meal, without drinks, are so full that you need a reservation weeks in advance for the good ones. Only people hoping to make it in careers that require residence in the city should move there. Most of them go home heartbroken, or take up different lives, anyway. The place is as synthetic as neon light. Warwick is gorgeously green, cheap, full of culture and rugged individuals, has great doctors, just about anything one could need. I'm so happy here, every day, I can't imagine why anyone would choose Manhattan if she could live in this birdsong-filled real world.
