Taking a job in Westchester but spouse has a job in Albany. If I like my job we'll move downstate but otherwise I will try to commute for a year.

1) Is this completely unreasonable? Should I maybe rent a room near work in case I need to stay one or two nights a week? I don't want to stay all week because we have two little kids.

2) Is there anywhere south of Albany (about 40mins) that has a good school district? I would be willing to drive a little over an hour to work and spouse can drive 40mins to Albany if we could find a good district and we'd both commute.

3) If we do move downstate, where are more reasonable places to live if commuting to Westchester (White Plains and southern Westchester)?

The reason we're not moving on a whim is that we both have professional jobs that are nearly impossible to get in the same area (because they're so specific). So far this is the closest we've found anything near each other.

Thanks in advance!

Red Hook school district is about 45 min south of Albany and is the most desirable in the area. Parts of the district offer easy access to the Taconic too.

I'd say Poughkeepsie is about midway between Albany and Westchester, but I haven't been too thrilled with the things I've heard about that city lately.

My brother-in-law makes the daily commute from Holmes, NY (southern Dutchess) to White Plains; he says it's about 50 minutes, but there is rarely much traffic. He and my sister have been very happy with the schools there; perhaps this area might be worth looking into.

Northern Dutchess county to WP is actually a very easy trip... easier than Albany to White Plains for sure. It would almost always be an hour and 20 mins each way... and downtown Albany is about 50 mins, give or take

An alternative would be to live somewhere like Lagrangeville/Union Vale in the Arlington school district, but that's 50ish miles from WP and over 80 from Albany.

Either way, I would suggest living near the Taconic Pkwy to make this trip feasible.

Arlington schools just outside of Poughkeepsie has a good rep. Easy access to Taconic. My guess is that would be about midpoint btwn Albany & Westchester depending on exact locale; slightly closer to the downstate than the capital district.

Sorry to be a pain, but is there a spot that's slightly closer to the capital region and still feasible for me to commute to New Rochelle? 45mins max to Albany? The reason is spouse works 5days/week, I have a bit more flexibility in my schedule and may not need to go in all 5 days a week. Thanks again!

Maybe the Ichabod Crane district? Kinderhook and Chatham among other towns.

IC is the only district I would even consider in Columbia County. I know someone who works in Troy, lives in Kinderhook and has a very easy commute.

Otherwise you are pretty much limited to northern Dutchess county.

While this isn't a "be all, end all", but this list could give an idea about Columbia County SD's in relation to other Albany area districts: 2013 Albany Area school district rankings - Business First
