I have just finished reading multiple posts about the lack of teaching positions (or I should say the over supply of teachers) in New York State. I am a native central New Yorker who moved 7 years ago down south (South Carolina, and now Raleigh, North Carolina), and I have regretted the decision to leave New York every day since. I absolutely hate it down here. Give me 8 feet of snow any day rather than 100 degree temperatures! I will be finishing my Masters in School Administration this May and want to return home to NY State. I know teaching jobs are tough to get In NY, but does anyone have any info on job situation for Assistant Principals/Principals positions? Or are any areas of New York better than others? My family lives in Buffalo and Syracuse, but I am willing to work anywhere in the state to get my foot back in the door (My B.A. English/Secondary Ed is from LeMoyne College, and I previously taught in a Central New York school district before leaving). Thanks for any insight.

There was another poster from CA several months back who is already credentialed (with many years experience) and has been unable to secure a face-to-face interview, much less a position in the Buffalo area.

According to the DOE site, you need 3 years experience as an administrator for reciprocity.

I can tell you firsthand the competition is fierce. I have a relative in Rochester who decided against pursuing admin. cert. because of the lack of positions. Also, the state audited the school and pushed back a bunch of administrators because they were considered underqualified! Imagine that?! Interviewing and getting an admin. position and then losing it months later due to a state audit!

Thanks for the info. It's about what I thought I would hear--not very hopeful. I guess I'll expand my search to other Northern states, such as Vermont, New Hampshire, etc. At this point, I will be happy to get above the Mason-Dixon line!

Sorry, I wish for myself and many of the other posters here it wasn't true as well. There are several recurring themes on the NY board and one of them is "educators in the south looking to come back home."

Potsdam.k12.ny.us - District Teacher Learning Ctr
OCM BOCES (Syr) - Director Career & tech Edu

Special Edu - Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES & Romulus & Cazenovia & Ithaca (4)
Herkimer CC - President
Wells College - Communications & Development

Thanks for the information. I actually mailed an application out to FM High School two days ago. I'm starting to see ads for next school year, but I think it will be more difficult for me being an out-of-state candidate.

You may want to look at the working population in the education system to see if there will be mass retirements soon. The baby boomers will be retiring by the masses in the next 5 to 6 years.

Default ADMIN JOBS & Politics, STILL hangin' in there!

I started out in teaching and still love the classroom, but felt led to try
something new. As I was told, "you would be great in admin.", which I still
believe to be true.
What I thought would be a wonderful opportunity has been
a frustration of continuous attempts at making it to the final round of
interviews and then not obtaining the prize due to a political system.
Not every job is political, but its apparent that most appointments are
socially and/or politically tied. Im willing to continue my attempts to secure a future as an admin. but find it all so frustrating.
I imagine if the shoe was on my foot and fit, I wouldnt be complaining...
Any suggestions...? Hangin in there...

I wish you the best of luck. We just moved our family to Raleigh from the Catskills. It is a big change here. Don't give up looking in New York. What I experienced in the Catskills the last few years we were there, is that the upstate schools have become a bit of a stepping stone for teachers as well as administrators. This is unfortunate, but true, and perhaps helpful to you in the long run. Keep your eyes open this year. In our district we had 4 principals and two assistant principals leave last year. Hope it works out for you.
