Hello dear friends,

We are planning on moving from Brooklyn to New Windsor Or Middletown, NY, around August.

We have a 3 old boy and a baby on the way(Nov due). We decided to buy our first home, and We found two new developments in the mentioned above towns, but our major concern is,

We hear mixed opinions on the Schools system(incl. the daycares and Pre-K) in both & safety/crime factor. As every family this is really important to us, as well as having a piece of mind while living there. Good neighborhoods, places to stay away from, etc.

I am working at Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY and it's a quite a commute. Unfortunately, that's what our budget allows us at the moment, especially when we talk about brand new home. I wish, I could find something in our price range($280K) and in better NYC commute radius, but I couldn't. Also, I guess after the maternity leave it looks like one of us have to find job in the area.

I've been looking for information(incl. from the locals) regarding New Windsor and Middletown and cities around. I know, it's far from my job but it's all about the kids future. My goal is not to go over 90 min commute, and be in a safe area with good schools, close to hospital, shopping area and etc. Not in dangerous zones. Oh, I forgot..Our son's birthday is Dec.28 and We heard that their Public Pre-K's cutting off date is Dec.1
Please, We kindly asking you for help with advice and valuable tips.

Thank you so much in advance.

I'd look into Chester/Washingtonville/Goshen/Montgomery/Town of Newburgh. Focus on the Chester, Washingtonville, Goshen, Valley Central districts -- good districts. These locations are safe and pleasant places to raise a family. The commute will be rather long, no doubt, but you won't be the only one doing it.

Plenty of shopping in Middletown/Newburgh and you'll have the staples (grocery, pharmacy) in just about any small town or village that you choose.

Avoid the City of Newburgh and its schools (New Windsor feeds into Newburgh City district, FYI).

The best advice I can give is to drive up and visit, get a feel for the area. Let me know if you have any questions!

We only found one new property in New Windsor and honestly we love it. It's the only one we can afford too, a $285K 3 bedroom in a brand new townhouses development. We are so excited to start the whole process with the purchasing part, but we really hope we aren't so naive to make the first time buyer mistake. As every parent, We want and wish the best to our kids, but the fact that New Windsor is part if Newburgh school destruct really worries us. Honestly, I don't know how we're going to deal with this big problem.

I believe that parts of New Windsor are in the Cornwall school district. So, it may be a matter of seeing which district it is in. Cornwall Central School District

New Windsor, NY

Yeah, that is true, although it is a very small fraction. More than likely OP is going to be on the Newburgh side. I know people who have come/gone through Newburgh City and turned out just fine. Solid head on your shoulders, knowing right from wrong, and not hanging out with the wrong crowd -- you'll be fine. You'll turn out more "street-savvy" than the average Joe, for sure, and that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
