I and my fiance are planning on moving to NY and we are needing advice on decent places to live.
I would love to find a suburban-like area as this is the type of area we are used to but if there are any good middle class or working-class areas that anyone knows of please let me know. I've heard that the Brighton Beach and Coney Island areas are good.

Are you looking in NY State or in the NYC area in particular?

Stay away from Coney Island, it's the ghetto.

I would recommend these:
In Jersey: South Orange, Maplewood, Montclair, West Orange, Teaneck, Roselle

On Long Island: Valley Stream, Baldwin, Wheatley Heights, Glen Cove, Bay Shore

Please include more info.

- Are you looking for a more hip, cool and active type suburb? or a more quiet and calm one?
- How far away from the city are you looking to try?
