Would anybody have drives or sites they would recommend for an elderly couple with limited mobility near Woodstock? We previously took a trip there and found a drive around the Ashokan Reservoir was certainly nice but had a hard time finding much else that was suitable for my parents.

You may want to look into nearby communities like Saugerties or New Paltz, which will have a little more. Maybe even parts of Kingston or Port Ewen may work too.

ckhthankgod - Saugurties and Kingston are only 15-20 minutes away from Woodstock. What would you recommend to do there?

Both are walkable villages with restaurants and a funky, artsy vibe. What are you looking to do?

Woodstock is a tourist trap for people with money from NYC. Any sense of a artist colony is long gone. The Ashokan is a beautiful reservoir but very little of it can be seen from the road. Kingston has very little to offer in regards to touristy things (the city is actually seen better days). Saugerties is good for antiquing but not much else. New Paltz has nice restaurants and interesting things are always going on. For instance they are having a chalk festival this weekend. If your folks like the great outdoors and have limited mobility I would recommend Minnewaska State Park which is twenty minutes west of New Paltz. If you get to the park early you can park at the top of the mountain and there is any easy walk (100 ft.) that has a nice view of the lake and access to an open area to picnic etc. There are also great lookout parking lots along route 44/55 just past the park that have great views of the valley and the Catskill Mountains to the north on clear days.

ckhthankgod - I would be looking for something similar to what jefslp described about Minnewaska State Park and route 44/55, where you have easy access to an overlook or can see views from the roadway.

jefspl - my wife and I are planning to visit New Paltz in September but several members of the family enjoyed the house we rented in Woodstock and would like to return there again.

Have you taken a ride on the Catskill Mountain Scenic Railroad yet? Very near to the Ashokan Reservoir.

We did something like this with my elderly in-laws, but on a different railroad. It was a big hit with everyone.

Yes, we took the railroad ride from near Phoenicia but a recent hurricane damaged the tracks so it only goes part way toward the reservoir. The only really scenic view you get from it is when it goes to the north end of the track where you have a view of the river. Most of the rest of the ride was through wooded areas with some views of the nearby river.

How about the Walkway Across the Hudson, in Highland? You can walk as long or short as you are able and have a nice view on a nice even surface for walking. Or the Roosevelt and Vanderbilt estates in Hyde Park?
