I don't know about that... the highest census tract in the city is 76,000 MHI, while many areas in the suburbs exceed 120,000 MHI.

Well, the Erie Canal and railroads went through the city. It had quite a bit of manufacturing(Rome Cable, Revere Copper(still there but downsized), etc.). It also had Griffiss Air Force Base until 1994, but the Business Park on the former Base still has some government offices and other businesses/industries.

I don't know if it had "an amazing amount" of wealth, but usually with industry comes those at the top that make quite a bit of money.

This is the census block group in the "urban" portion of the city with the highest MHHI and it is in that previously mentioned area: Census Block Group 022200-3 in Oneida County, New York

I want to say that he/she meant in the city. Ironically, that census tract doesn't even have the census block groups with the highest median household incomes in the city. I found 2 census block groups with median household incomes over $100,000. This one in the Central Park neighborhood: Census Block Group 004500-4 in Erie County, New York

and this one in South Buffalo next to Cazenovia Park: Census Block Group 000700-1 in Erie County, New York

In Geneva, you could say that the South Main Street neighborhood would fit. Welcome to South Main Street, Geneva

Around North Main Street near the hospital/Geneva High also has that look. https://goo.gl/maps/gfRjvY2KwLA2

This may be the most affluent "old money" city neighborhood/area/block group in Upstate NY: Census Block Group 000900-2 in Onondaga County, New York

This is the census tract it is in: Census Tract 061301 in Saratoga County, New York

The other block group would be the second most affluent city block group in Upstate NY: Census Block Group 061301-2 in Saratoga County, New York
