It's that time again. I have several months to consider where I going to move next before my lease is up. Been living in Portland/Vancouver Metro area for the last couple of years, and now, the rent situation is pricing me out of the area.
I would like to move to the east coast. I have family in Pittsburgh Pa, but would prefer living within 1 or 2 hours drive to Warwick, NY.
I would really love to live in Warwick, but my circumstance do not match with the cost of living there. So, this is where I would appreciate some guidance.
Could anyone offer direction as to which counties in Pa, are close to Orange County NY, and offer relatively safe suburban type neighborhood living, with managable rents (and cost of living) for one with a modest retiree income?
Even as I'm typing this it seems like a pipe dream, but your suggestions could help me in getting my research started.
Pike County, PA is closest to Warwick. Rentals in the urban areas are expensive and to my knowledge there are no senior or low income housing options. Port Jervis, NY would be your best bet. But there is currently a 2 year waiting list for senior apartments there. Middletown, NY has more senior apartment options. New York State provides more services to seniors than does PA.
Hawley, PA, which is about 1.5 hours to Warwick has a very nice senior housing complex called Hawley Village. See link.
How about Bushkill PA? Have friends who have recently moved there to be close Warwick. They are renting now, but I have looked online and seen homes that are sooooo reasonable to buy.
They are all depressed places even though a big casino is planned for Monticello. South Fallsburg is mostly Hasidic with a chicken processing plant downtown. Wurtsboro is much better and closer to Warwick but rent is expensive. Horizons at Wurtsboro is a senior rental community but vacancies are rare.
Very much appreciate your comments on this subject.
Sincerely,
