Would anyone who has insulated their home well be able to share with us the cost of heating a house in Itaca? Assume about 65 degrees during hours when someone is home, otherwise less. If you could give the approximate size of the house, that would help us get some idea. Thank you.

You might be able to get an estimate from NYSEG. I know the gas and electric company where I used to live would do this.

There are so many different factors, that it may be impossible to give a simple answer to your question.

Can you be more specific? Are you heating with electric, gas or oil? Is it a forced air system, or radiators, or baseboard heat? Do you have a fireplace or a woodstove?

We have forced air, fueled by propane, and a woodstove in the livingroom. The thermostat is set to 60 degrees, and the house is routinely over 70 degrees when the woodstove is going. The woodstove is going full blast if we're home. The house is 1600sqft, and insulation is only okay as the house is 150+ years old and there's only so much you can do.

We filled the tank in Nov for $800. The stove is very high efficiency with a blower and cost around $4800, but you can certainly get a good one for far less. Ours is a special enameled one that we wanted and it costs more than one which is purely functional.

All the wood came off our land, so that was free. We've used about half the propane, so about $400. However, that also covers our hot water and cook stove, which are also heated by propane.

So the cost for us to heat our home for the entire winter will definitely be under $500, if you don't factor in the cost of the woodstove.

If you're house hunting, I would just ask the previous owners or the real estate agent, but remember there are always things you can do to lower your heating bill.

Good luck!

Does anyone who is on the downtown gas (I assume there is gas) line wish to share average costs?
