New York state will require state workers to be vaccinated by Labor Day or be tested weekly for COVID-19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced Wednesday.
At the same time, Cuomo encouraged local governments to take similar steps in New York, as well as school districts in areas where there are high COVID-19 positivity rates. Patient-facing health care workers at public run hospitals will also be required to be vaccinated, Cuomo said.
The move follows similar efforts expected to occur on the federal level by President Joe Biden's administration, which will set a similar mandate for federal workers and contractors.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio this week announced city workers will be required to be vaccinated or be tested on a weekly basis for COVID-19.
The governor said he would be working with the state's public worker unions on the vaccination or testing requirements. Labor groups have signaled opposition to vaccination requirements for their members in recent days.
"New York state is doing the same and we're working with our unions to implicate this fairly," Cuomo said. "I encourage all local governments the same. It's smart, it's fair, it's in everyone's interest."
What a bunch of bull.
Screw Adolph Cuomo.
I don’t care about stance on pro/anti vax. This crosses the line as Americans.
Our government was originally set up for this exact reason. The gov/politicians are way too up in our business. Yeah it’s partly our fault because we somehow let this happen, This should be a matter where the people dictate the terms and how to best handle covid. Not the government pulling our strings, and you goddam bet your life this crap isn’t because they care, they all have gains to make with crap like this. What a ****show.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plea to private sector companies to order all their employees back to workplaces and require vaccinations — even for shoppers and diners — met with a simple “not possible” Wednesday from most city business leaders.
Large employers don’t believe they can act without a government requirement. Small firms are having difficulty luring staff back as it is. And retailers and restaurateurs have little appetite for another rule to enforce.
“We require our staff to get vaccinated,” said St. John Frizell, co-owner of Gage & Tollner, the 19th-century Brooklyn restaurant that recently returned after a 17-year hiatus. “Currently, we’re not interested in requiring proof of vaccination from our customers.”
Frontline healthcare workers at New York State-run hospitals will have to get vaccinated against COVID-19 by Labor Day and won’t have the option to get tested weekly instead, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced during a Zoom webinar Wednesday, July 27.
“In New York and our state hospitals, all patient-facing healthcare workers must get vaccinated. There will be no testing option,” said Cuomo during a virtual session hosted by the nonprofit Association for a Better New York (ABNY). “That is a point of contact that could be a serious spreading event and we want to make sure that those healthcare workers are vaccinated — period.”
Ya' know those WW2 movies..where a formal drum beat plays in the background, as the German staff car pulls up to a bldg.? Can easily fit our state ruler...err..governor..into that scene.
