I came across this article which shows the percentage of 6 figure income jobs in a metro area.

In terms of Upstate NY area, Albany-Schenectady-Troy came in 42nd place out of 358 metro areas, with 6.7% of area jobs having a 6 figure income. It was also 15th for mid sized areas(350,000-1 million people range). Actuaries are the most over indexed 6 figure job in the area.

Next was Syracuse coming in at 60th overall with 5.1% of area jobs having 6 figure incomes. Economics Teachers, Postsecondary is the most over indexed position area.

Rochester came in at 67th with 4.9% of area jobs having a 6 figure income. Physics Teachers, Postsecondary is the most over indexed position in the area.

Buffalo came in at 97th with 4% of area jobs having 6 figure incomes. Anesthesiologists are the most over indexed 6 figure position in the area.

Binghamton came in at 121st with 3.2% of area jobs having 6 figure incomes. Judges, Magistrate Judges, and Magistrates are the most over indexed 6 figure position in the area.

Ithaca comes in at 139th with 2.9% of area positions having a 6 figure income. Biological Science Teachers, Postsecondary are the most over indexed 6 figure jobs in the area.

Utica-Rome comes in at 171st with 2.5% of area jobs having a 6 figure income. Computer and Information Research Scientists are the most over indexed position in the area.

Glens Falls comes in at 192nd with 2.2% of area jobs having a 6 figure income. Judges, Magistrate Judges, and Magistrates are the most over indexed in the area.

Watertown-Fort Drum comes in at 232nd with 2% of area jobs having a 6 figure income. Judges, Magistrate Judges, and Magistrates are the most over indexed position in the area.

Kingston comes in at 276th with 1.5% of area jobs having a 6 figure income. Judges, Magistrate Judges, and Magistrates are again the most over indexed position in the area.

This list also includes the change in said employment between 2015-2018, the total of 6 figure jobs in each area and the median annual wage for each area. You can see where these areas rank in regards to these categories as well. I'll just say that the Albany area does pretty well in general on this list.

I guess I’ll add some thoughts. I’m actually a little surprised that Syracuse is second in terms of Upstate areas on this list and was as high as it was overall. I say that because the area is known for being pretty blue collar, but I think the presence of a major University and other colleges in relation to the population may play a part in this.

However, Ithaca has a lower percentage and an even stronger college influence. It does have the highest median annual wage out of the Upstate metros on the list though, with Albany second and Syracuse third.

Albany, Syracuse and Buffalo are 1(37th overall), 2(49th) and 3(59th) in terms of growth of said positions for Upstate areas.

Also, in terms of the total number of said jobs, it goes Albany, Rochester and Buffalo for the top 3 Upstate areas.

I’m thinking for the top position for the Syracuse area, that is college related as well.
