This will likely be moved, as Ithaca is its own area about an hour SW of Syracuse, but cost of living is just above the national average. This is likely due to it being relatively discovered, but it isn't an area of explosive growth like some other places.
Cornell is a University, but in terms of communities Cayuga Heights is a relatively higher end community just north/NE of the city in the town of Ithaca and near the Cornell campus. Lansing is another nice town just north of Cayuga Heights with its own school district and has the only mall in the area, along with some other big box shopping. Fall Creek is a solid/nice area on the North Side of the city. There are some more rural areas nearby too. Of course, this will come down to what you are looking for.
Ithaca College and Tompkins Cortland Community College in Dryden, even further NE of Ithaca past Lansing coming from the city, are a couple of other institutions of higher learning in that area.
