There are other venues about 20-25 minutes away in Elmira like the Clemens Center and the Arnot Art Museum.

Given that it has a Fortune 500 company(Corning Incorporated), it also has this orchestra: https://www.osfl.org/

Also, it has an award winning Downtown: https://www.planning.org/greatplaces...rketstreet.htm

and got this award from Rand McNally in the recent past:

Much of the big box shopping is in Big Flats/Horseheads, nearby suburbs of Elmira, but there is some in the Gang Mills/Painted Post area just to the west.

It is also about 25-30 minutes from Watkins Glen, 50 minutes from Ithaca, an hour from Binghamton, about an hour and a half from Rochester and an hour and 45 minutes from Syracuse.

^ We are planning to visit Dundas - it looks like that's right nearby!

Another Canadian town on our itinerary is Collingwood. I was actually wondering if maybe some of the NY towns mentioned in this thread are more comparable to Dundas or Collingwood as opposed to Niagara-on-the-Lake?

Be sure to check out the Bruce Peninsula I have spent many days there enjoying the scenery. Tobermory is on the tip. My friends had a cottage in Wiarton, when I was growing up. I love that area.

Unique restaurants, browsing downtown shops, lakes and waterfalls, historic home tours, outdoor tours similar to this: https://www.railexplorers.net/

Georgian Bay looks absolutely magical to me! The little rocky islands with pine trees on them - so beautiful. I really love pines / evergreens.

Looking at Collingwood, I'm thinking of Oswego in terms of being a smaller waterfront city with some nice, older historical architecture and both are about the same population. Oswego does have Oswego State on the western outskirts of the city and has gorgeous sunsets. It is about 40 minutes NW of Syracuse on Lake Ontario.

Some Oswego information: https://www.oswegony.org/

There used to be a commercial with the slogan, "Where the water never ends." It makes sense given the view of Lake Ontario. Similar to Collingwood, there are beaches nearby along the shore like his example minutes to the west: https://parks.ny.gov/parks/fairhavenbeach/maps.aspx This renaissance festival takes place not too far from that beach park: https://www.sterlingfestival.com/ and a nearby apple orchard: https://ontarioorchards.com/shop-loc...ples-pumpkins/

If you go a bit further about 40 minutes west along the shore, you will run into this: https://parks.ny.gov/parks/chimneybluffs/

Here are a couple going east along the shore: https://parks.ny.gov/parks/sandyisland/details.aspx
https://parks.ny.gov/parks/selkirkshores/maps.aspx

In terms of Dundas, it appears to be similar to those two cities in terms of population(about 25,000 people), but it is attached/apart of Hamilton. In that case, you may be looking at say Cohoes, which is right across the Hudson River from Troy and not too far north of Albany. It is a small city that has been seeing some steady investment in recent years: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.7732...7i16384!8i8192

https://www.ci.cohoes.ny.us/
https://www.ci.cohoes.ny.us/454/New-Developments
https://www.cohoesldc.org/
https://www.cohoesida.org/

There are about 16,000 people in the city. Just like Dundas, it has a waterfall presence in the city limits: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cohoes_Falls
https://uncoveringnewyork.com/cohoes-falls/

Cohoes is also not too far from the Adirondack or Catskill Mountains, among others within an hour or so.

Dundas: https://www.google.com/maps/@43.2668...7i16384!8i8192

I would also say that Geneva, Oneonta and Cortland come to mind in terms of having similar Downtowns as those Canadian cities. Kingston and Beacon in the Hudson Valley are also similar in terms of size.

Geneva: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.8666...7i13312!8i6656

Oneonta: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.4541...7i16384!8i8192

Cortland: https://www.google.com/maps/@42.5992...7i16384!8i8192

Beacon: https://www.google.com/maps/@41.5082...7i16384!8i8192

Welcome to Beacon, NY (has Metro-North access into NYC)

A couple reasons I find these 'analogous city' comparisons so fascinating: It's partly an admiration for the talent and knowledge to be able to determine the best match. But also these comparisons can be a useful way to expand options. Basically the idea of "if this town appeals to you, then this similar town in another area / state / country might also appeal to you" or "if you like this town but just wish it was a little bigger / smaller, here's a town that's pretty much a bigger / smaller version of the one you like."

It was interesting that Saratoga Springs was the first city suggested in this thread, because it's actually the location that made me think of the question in the first place (what NY towns are most like NOTL?) I was reading some of the Saratoga Springs posts on city-data and was considering if it's a place we should include in our travels this summer. Then I started wondering about comparisons between the Canadian towns and New York towns we'll be visiting.

Since I know Skaneateles pretty well, maybe someone could tell me how Saratoga Springs compares to Skaneateles? Does Saratoga Springs have a more urban feel as opposed to Skaneateles' more cozy, charming, quaint setting? I see that the population of Saratoga Springs is significantly bigger than Skaneateles.

Hopefully some others will chime in, but the short answer is yes. Saratoga Springs is more in line with those small cities a couple posts above, but with more of an upscale look/feel.
