This has probably been mentioned earlier in the thread(maybe not), but Glens Falls is another community that would probably have some appeal as well: Glens Falls is full of things to do, delicious restaurants, and numerous places to shop for everyone in your family or friends.

Here is a list that made me think of this thread...

Shop at 14 of the Best Main Streets in New York State: https://www.iloveny.com/blog/post/sh...ew-york-state/

Another list, which includes some of the same communities: https://cnynews.com/best-new-york-state-towns/

A couple of other lists: https://www.countryliving.com/life/t...s-in-new-york/

https://www.worldatlas.com/cities/11...n-streets.html

So, given that some of these places are mentioned on multiple lists, that can also give some indication of how they are viewed.

As for the upscale piece, many of the NY communities mentioned have that to some degree. I'd say that Saratoga Springs is more well known out of those mentioned, but I'd say that Skaneateles(village) is the most affluent of the communities mentioned. I believe it is the only one with a 6 figure median household income and its location in between Syracuse and Auburn, allows for flexibility. An example of this is if you are into live theater, not only is there Syracuse Stage in Syracuse, which offers professional theater, as well as productions from Syracuse University's Drama department: https://vpa.syr.edu/academics/drama/theater-complex/ , you also have the The Rev Theatre Company at the Merry Go Round Playhouse in Emerson Park in Auburn: https://therevtheatre.com There is some overlapping between the two, but you would be minutes from live performances all year. This doesn't include the Redhouse Arts Center in Syracuse: https://theredhouse.org/ and the Cortland Repertory Theatre in Preble(summer) and Cortland(the rest of the year): https://cortlandrep.org/ , among others in the area.

To illustrate the affluence in Skaneateles, this information should give you some ideas: https://www.syracuse.com/news/2016/1..._property.html

https://www.syracuse.com/realestate/...0-million.html

https://www.syracuse.com/news/2014/1...aneateles.html

I'll stop there, but there are others as well.
In terms of the bolded part, this older thread gets into why this may be a good idea(especially the 10th post in the thread): https://www.city-data.com/forum/buff...e-buffalo.html

To the OP, would you consider Lewiston as an option?

I like Lewiston, but my top picks for where to live are Corning, Rochester area, and Skaneateles.
